CLICK TO HEAR JACK HALL’S INTERVIEW WITH STATE REP. DAVE PRESTIN (R-CEDAR RIVER)
The July 1st deadline to pass the state’s School Aid Budget for Fiscal Year 2026 has passed with no budget voted on by the Michigan House.
Representatives had Senate Bill 166 on their agenda yesterday, but it became clear after the state Senate adjourned at 5 p.m. that the House would be working toward a substitute for what passed the Senate earlier this year.
Republican Speaker Matt Hall says he saw a unique opportunity for the House Democrats to become very relevant in the budget process when majority Democrats in the Senate abdicated their responsibility and adjourned.
House Minority Leader Ranjeev Puri says “Matt Hall and the Republicans have not given a reason to ever take them at their word”, and added the GOP in the House is not serious about actually getting a deal done.
State representative Dave Prestin (R-Cedar River) says when they get back to Lansing, they should take up budgets one at a time…starting with education, higher ed, and transportation. State Senator Ed McBroom (R-Norway) says there is no crisis right now, as the fiscal year doesn’t end until September 30th.
