With the 4th of July holiday behind us, the American Red Cross is holding a series of blood drives this week in the Upper Peninsula to replenish the supplies that typically dwindle as people take vacations and road trips.
The Red Cross says that blood has a shelf life of 42 days, which means ongoing donations are key to ensure medical needs are met. Type O blood donors and those giving platelets are especially needed as the summer season continues.
Blood drives this week in the U.P. are scheduled:
Monday in Escanaba at the Wellspring Church from 11:00 until 5:00
Tuesday in Powers/Spalding at the Fire Hall from 9:00 until 2:00
Tuesday in Menominee at the American Legion Post from 9:00 until 1:00
Wednesday in Bessemer at the VFW Hall from 9:00 until 1:00
You can donate by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor App, or by going to red cross blood dot org. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
