Explosions could be heard all over Escanaba Wednesday morning, coming from U.P. Towing and Recycling on 9th Avenue North.
Large plumes of thick, black smoke began billowing from the building at just after 10:00 in the morning. Emergency crews are on the scene and are warning people to stay away from the area as they handle the situation.
The Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds says it is closing the gates to its acreage and people should stay away. The business is not on the fairgrounds but is nearby. The fairgrounds will be closed until further notice.
Details remain sketchy as crews continue working the scene. There’s been no immediate reports of injuries from the exploding gas tanks.
The City of Escanaba is warning of possible dirty water in that area, and people should not drink any tap water in homes and businesses in that area until the city gives an “all clear”.
