More details on that huge three-year rebuild of U-S 2 through Escanaba, which is set to start in 2027 and run through 2029.
Dave Bradley is a design engineer with M-DOT’s Crystal Falls Transporatation Service Center, which is spearheading this $31 million project. He says It will be done in phases, from near the US-2/North 30th Street intersection near Menard’s, all the way through town, to near the US-2 intersection with Danforth Road and Bay College.
The project will not include those two busy intersections, but will come close. No work will be done during the winter months.
Besides the complete rebuild of the highway, digging three feet deep to remove 90-year-old concrete, but will also see the replacement of the railroad underpass on Lincoln Road.
There will be a new traffic light installed at the highway’s intersection with 12th Avenue North, at the entrance to the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds. Also, the current traffic light near Wal-Mart at 5tn Avenue North will be moved to 6th Avenue North, where Drifter’s Restauarnt is located on the corner.
Further down, the awkward intersection of Washington Avenue and the highway, will be eliminated.
The City of Escanaba will do major uitility upgrades in that corridor, including the installation of new street lights.
