Denise Donohue, CEO of the County Road Association of Michigan, issued the following statement regarding the tentative road funding and state budget agreement:
“The County Road Association extends thanks and congratulations to Governor Whitmer, House Speaker Matt Hall, and Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks for reaching a budget and road funding deal that makes transportation a priority. While the $3 billion mark was not reached and the final number isn’t yet clear, it is a significant increase. It’s both a vote of confidence in Michigan’s 83 county road agencies and a big move in the right direction for Michigan motorists.
“CRA is encouraged by provisions in the agreement that redirect $500 million from the Corporate Income Tax into roads and immediately dedicate $688 million to the Neighborhood Road Fund, with increases scheduled each year until it reaches $1.04 B in FY 2030.
“At the same time, CRA is concerned with the loss of $600 million in income tax transfers to the Michigan Transportation Fund, which reduces the dollars available for statewide road maintenance and preservation. It is unclear if the Neighborhood Road Fund will contain the talked-about $100 million/year directed to the Local Bridge Program.”
