Brandy Johnson, President of the Michigan Community College Association, today released the following statement regarding the FY 2025–26 State Budget and Michigan’s investment in student success and workforce development:
“Michigan’s community and tribal colleges thank Governor Whitmer and legislative leaders for passing a budget that invests in student success and workforce development by strengthening the critical role our colleges play.”
“This budget maintains funding for Michigan Reconnect and the Michigan Achievement Scholarship’s Community College Guarantee. These programs help make college and career training more affordable and accessible. We encourage lawmakers to build on this investment with bipartisan legislation to codify the Michigan Achievement Scholarship and lower the Reconnect age to 21, ensuring these opportunities are sustainable for the future.”
“We are also pleased to see full funding for MPSERS at the lowered employer cap, consistent with recent statutory changes, and the creation of a Dual Enrollment Task Force to expand student access. The budget provides a 2.1% one-time increase for operations, supporting colleges as they plan and deliver programs that meet regional workforce needs. Sustained investment in operations and infrastructure will be critical to ensure students learn on modern equipment in facilities that reflect today’s workforce demands.”
“Michigan’s bipartisan commitment to expanding postsecondary access is essential to achieving the state’s Sixty by 30 goal, ensuring more residents earn a degree or credential by 2030. This budget represents an important investment in students, employers, and the future of our state.”
