The Michigan State Police (MSP) Computer Crimes Unit, Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force is announcing the arrest of Jacob Bruce Bergum, 34 of Drummond Island, for child sexually abusive activity – aggravated and using a computer to commit a crime.
Bergum was arrested following an investigation which was initiated by the Michigan Department of Corrections when it was learned Bergum was viewing files of child sexually abusive material on the internet. A search of his electronic device resulted in digital evidence being seized.
Bergum was charged with five counts of child sexually abusive activity – aggravated, and one count of using a computer to commit a crime. Bergum was additionally served with Habitual Offender – 4th Offense Notice, which may increase his penalties if convicted. Bergum has been arraigned in the 91st District Court of Chippewa County. His bond was set at $250,000 cash with additional conditions. He is next due to be in court on December 1, 2025.
If convicted, Bergum faces up to ten years in prison for the child sexually abusive activity – aggravated, and up to ten years in prison for using a computer to commit a crime. He is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
The MSP Computer Crimes Unit encourages parents to speak to their children about the safe use of the internet.
