The City of Escanaba on Monday issued a press release to remind the public about how the city prioritizes clearing roads, alleys, and parking lots of snow. The city has been hit with an unusual amount of snowfall since the blizzard just after Christmas dumped 14 inches of snow on the community.
More than two weeks later, roads are still not down to bare pavement. That’s mostly because of several more accumulating snow events since the big one occurred. That has led to some complaints from Escanaba residents, as large piles of snow has remained in the middle of Ludington Street, and many side roads have been consistently slippery. That Monday afternoon press release is posted below:
Snow plowing and snow removal are performed according to established priorities.
Snow Plowing Priorities:
1. Major streets
2. Local streets
3. Alleys
4. Bike paths
Snow Hauling Priorities:
1. Main Street: School zones and angle parking areas on Ludington Street from 8th Street to 16th Street
2. Main Street:
• Lincoln Road to 16th Street
• 8th Street to 2nd Street
3. Stephenson Avenue, 3rd Avenue N., and Sheridan Road:
4. 100 blocks: 10th Street and 14th Street
5. Other 100 blocks
6. City parking lots
7. DDA (Downtown Development Authority) parking lots
The City is responsible for plowing approximately 82 miles of roads and 15 miles of bike paths.
The highest priority is keeping major streets open and passable for emergency services and essential travel. As a result, residential streets, local roads, and alleys are not cleared until major streets have been completed. Bike paths are plowed only after all roadways and alleys are accessible and safe.
We understand the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience during winter snow events and in the days that follow.
Please remember that it is illegal and unsafe to push snow across streets or avenues, or to push snow into the center lanes of Ludington Street, Stephenson Avenue, or other major roadway
