The Marinette City Council is moving forward with plans to relocate City Hall and expand the Police Department at the former Armory on Mary Street. Council members heard updated cost projections comparing two options — building an addition at the Armory or renovating the current City Hall.
Consultants with Bold Construction told council a 7,500 square-foot City Hall addition at the Armory is projected to cost just over 3-point-1 million dollars.
That option includes shared lobby space, restrooms, and offices with the police department. By comparison, renovating the existing City Hall building, even just one floor, would cost more than five-point-one million dollars due to code upgrades, sprinkler systems, and elevator issues.
Public comments showed residents divided, some urging council to slow down, others pushing for a strong, visible civic presence.
Concerns were also raised about whether sharing space would limit the police department’s future growth. Council members debated square footage and long-term needs, but city officials emphasized the department will actually gain significantly more space than it currently has. After discussion, council voted to release designers to move into the next phase, allowing final design work and formal bidding to begin. The next step will be detailed design development, followed by competitive bids to determine the final project cost.
