The future of the former UW–Green Bay Marinette Campus is once again uncertain, after a potential buyer backed away from a redevelopment proposal.
Marinette County leaders say Aurora Global Defense Systems has withdrawn its interest in purchasing part of the campus, leaving officials searching for new ideas on how to reuse the property. County Administrator John Lefebvre says time is becoming a factor, especially for buildings now sitting unheated.
“The longer those buildings sit there, the more it’s going to take to bring them back up to a usable condition.”
Despite the setback, Lefebvre says one part of the campus stands out as worth saving — the theater.
“I do believe the theater is a gem. I do believe that the county needs to figure out a way to save that theater.”
Community members also spoke in support of preserving the theater, calling it a vital cultural and educational resource for local students.
County officials are now considering options that could include demolition of some buildings, new housing development, public-private partnerships, or bringing in consultants to help shape a long-term plan. For now, leaders say they’re back to square one — but determined to find a future use that benefits the entire community.
