The blizard that has arrived in the Upper Peninsula today has led to many businesses closing their doors for today, and for tomorrow. The latest is one off Escanaba’s largest employers: Engineered Machine Products. Gabe Kluka is the Maintenance Manager at EMP. He told RRN News Sunday afternoon that the late-night Sunday shift will be cancelled, as well as the first two shifts on Monday.
“This is the first time we’ve ever closed,” Kluka said. “I’ve been here 25 years, and this is the first time that we’ve been closed due to weather. It’s just too dangerous to travel. We didn’t think it was worth our employees taking the risk to come into work tonight. We’ll re-open at 11 p.m. Monday night.”
Kluka says that even during the COVID-19 pandemic, they continued working, albeit with reduced crews. He says they’ll keep an eye on the weather on Monday and decide if further closures might be needed.
