Snow began falling in Delta County on Sunday, with the possibility of up to three feet of accumulation by Tuesday. Delta County Emergency Management says before conditions go downhill, there are things you can do to be able to rode out the storm.
The agency is also laying out the potential challenges that emergency responders may face during this event.
Heavy snowfall combined with strong winds may create whiteout conditions, heavy drifting, and impassable roads. While our firefighters and emergency responders will always respond and do everything possible to reach those in need, these extreme conditions may result in longer response times than normal.
Residents who live in small villages, rural areas, or locations accessed primarily by side roads should be aware that those roads may become blocked by drifting snow or temporarily impassable during the storm. In some cases, areas may become temporarily isolated until road crews are able to reopen routes, which may not occur until conditions improve, potentially by Tuesday.
We strongly encourage everyone to prepare now by making sure you have what you need to remain safely at home if travel becomes impossible.
Please consider preparing the following:
• Enough food, water, and essential supplies through Tuesday
• Medications and medical necessities
• Fuel for vehicles and generators
• Flashlights, batteries, and backup heat sources if available
Our department will continue to monitor conditions and remain ready to respond. Your preparation and cooperation help ensure that emergency resources can be used where they are needed most during severe weather.
Additionally, be sure to make sure your furnace vent isn’t covered from the drifting snow. If you loose power and run a generator, never run that generator indoors. It will fill your house with carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Also space heaters are very dangerous. Never run space heaters on extension cords. Don’t use portable propane heaters indoors. Check on your elderly neighbors if you can.
Please stay safe and prepare ahead.
