It’s Day Two of the blizzard that has basically shut down usual life across the Upper Peninsula. Massive snow drifts are plaguing the area thanks to winds gusting as high as 60 miles per hour, and the snow is still falling heavily as of 9 a.m. ET.
Many businesses are closed for a second day today. Hospitals across the UP are open, but only for essential and emergency services. All schools in the region were closed today, along with Northern Michigan University, Michigan Tech, and Bay College.
In some Upper Peninsula cities, the only businesses open are 24-hour gas stations like Circle K, Kwik Trip, and some Krist locations.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered all state offices closed across the Upper Peninsula today, and multiple city, county, and township governmental offices are also closed. Police continue to urge everyone to stay off the roads, and most people have heeded those warnings, with extremely light traffic being reported even in cities.
Whitmer has also opened an Emergency Operations Center in Lansing as the work begins to provide state assistance to local communities that are buried.
Ryan Metzger at the National Weather Service in Negaunee told RRN News Monday morning that many parts of the UP have already received more than 20 inches of snow, and he says another foot is on the way before things die down this afternoon.
