The City of Escanaba is making progress on cleaning up the snow drifts that have forced nearly every business and nearly every public service to close for the past two days.
According to the National Weather Service, Escanaba received 33.5 inches from this storm.
Escanaba Public Works Director Kent Dubord told RRN’s Jack Hall Tuesday afternoon that after pulling crews off the road for twelve hours on Monday, they were all back at it Monday night at 10 p.m. He says they worked throughout the night to get Ludington Street and other main arteries at least passable, after massive snow drifts made snowmobiles the only logical mode of transportation (and some people did).
Dubord said that as of 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, five of his guys were still out plowing, pushing 16 hours. Others went back for a rest before all will be back at it at midnight Tuesday night. He says all main local streets are now at least passable.
“It’s all about adversity in life, and on Sunday, I felt like it was a challenge that we’d be able to conquer on Sudnay,” DuBord said. “Monday morning, we felt so defeated when we had to come back to the shop and realize that safety-wise, it wasn’t the right call to keep going because the winds were just too strong. But when they went back out last night, the guys went back out ready to win this snowfight. They’ve done an incredible job.”
Dubord says they have 82 miles of roadway and 15 miles of bikepath to take care of, but the bikepaths will take a few more days to get to.
“The goal when we come back at midnight, and for tomorrow morning, is to get all these alleys opened up,” Dubord said. “The rest of the crew will begin hauling snow off of main street (Ludington) from the angle parking areas between 10th and 16th Streets. We’re going to be picking up snow for the next few weeks.”
Dubord says that all garbage and recycling pick-ups have been cancelled for this entire week, and will resume t the week of March 23–27. All recycling routes will be serviced during that week, and the regular collection schedule will be followed.
• Monday: Monday’s Route
• Tuesday: Tuesday’s Route
• Wednesday: Recycling (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Week and Commercial)
• Thursday: Thursday’s Route
• Friday: Friday’s Route
Please ensure your cart is placed out for collection on your scheduled day. To help keep ervice running smoothly, clear snow from around your carts. Items may not be collected if they are not set out by 6:30 a.m., are buried in snow, placed too close to other objects, or have lids that are not fully closed.
