After a successful launch of Copper Queen Whiskey in May, the distillery behind the product is giving back with a donation in support of the Calumet Theatre.
Richard Anderson, Partner at Iron Fish Distillery, made the commitment to support the 119-year-old theatre during the initial launch of Copper Queen and honored that during a check presentation on Friday for $1,000.
“Iron Fish Distillery is incredibly supportive of all of the terrific arts and cultural programs that the Calumet Theatre provides to this community,” Anderson said. “It’s important that it continues long into the future.”
The Copper Queen brand and label design both have deep roots in the history of Calumet. Narisco Bianchi, an Italian immigrant, launched Copper Queen in 1914, a “high grade” blended whiskey. Soon miners throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula and in Red Jacket saloons were reaching for Bianchi’s ‘Copper Queen’ Whiskey.
The whiskey of those days nearly faded away due to prohibition, if not for local business owners Jerry and Sandy Mitchell locating an original bottle and advocating for the reintroduction of this once treasured spirit. Iron Fish Distillery rekindled Copper Queen™ Whiskey after more than 100 years in June 2019.
“Our motivation for reviving Copper Queen Whiskey was to create a postcard for the Copper Country in a bottle,” said Anderson. “We showcase the history and splendor of the Keweenaw Peninsula in each and every bottle to enthusiasts throughout Michigan.”
The unique bottle label of Copper Queen is inspired by the many famous actresses, such as Lillian Russel, who have performed at the Calumet Theatre for more than a century.
Marlin Lee, Executive Director at Calumet Theatre, said, “We appreciate Iron Fish recognizing our shared history together. Their support since their launch has been terrific. This donation will go to support programming for our 120th season in 2020.”
Copper Queen Whiskey is available in 750 ML (43% ABV / 86 proof) and is available in many stores throughout Michigan.
