Some Northern Michigan University fraternity members were injured over the weekend when they were pushing a bath tub for charity along M-28 and a car plowed into them.
The Alger County Sheriff tells Local Three News that the accident happened near Shelter Bay at 11:30 in the morning on Saturday.
The members of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity push a bath tub 165 miles between Lake Superior State University and N-M-U every year.
This year, the money raised goes to the Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital Marquette community non-profit.
The student who was pushing the tub was pinned between the front and rear escort vehicles when the car hit them. The driver and passenger of the rear escort vehicle were also taken to the hospital for treatment. The unidentified driver of the vehicle was cited for careless driving. Their names and conditions were not released as of Monday afternoon.
NMU Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students, Christine Greer, issued this statement to Local Three News:
“It is scary to have members of the NMU family involved in such an accident and we are grateful that the accident was not worse. Our students were raising money for charity with the traditional tub push. NMU officials are assisting the students and their families at the time with the hope they will return to campus soon.”
