Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore announces that all winter camping now requires a reservation through www.recreation.gov.
Reservations can be made online or by phone at 1-877-444-6777.
Winter camping is allowed at the park’s three drive-in campgrounds: Little Beaver Lake, Twelvemile Beach, and Hurricane River campgrounds. Fees are $15 per night for the winter season, which runs from November 1 through April 30.
Drive-in campgrounds are generally accessed by snowmobile as entry roads are not plowed in winter. Drive-in camping reservations can be made up to 6 months in advance.
Dispersed winter backcountry camping is no longer allowed in the national lakeshore. Backcountry winter campers must camp in existing backcountry sites and all campers need a reservation and a permit. Backcountry fees are $5 per person per night with a $15 reservation fee.
Winter backcountry sites are accessed by ski and snowshoe along existing trails. Snowmobiles are prohibited on hiking trails but are allowed to travel park roads and remain overnight at trailheads. Use of GPS coordinates is recommended as finding backcountry sites in deep snow may be difficult. More information on winter camping is available on the park’s website: www.nps.gov/piro.
Backcountry reservations for the summer/fall season of 2020, which begins May 15, will be available starting January 1, 2020 at 10 am via www.recreation.gov.
