The Bonifas Arts Center has been awarded two grants of $18,000 and $9,625 from the State of Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA).
The $18,000 grant will be used for operating expenses, and the $9,625 grant, which is a capital improvement grant, will be used to pay, in part, for insulating the theater roof. National Endowment for the Arts contributions are wrapped into the MCACA operations grant.
Organizations receiving MCACA grant awards are required to match the funds with public and private dollars, including memberships, donations and fundraisers. The Bonifas receives local support from the City of Escanaba and many local businesses and its members, who show long-term support by donating annually to their community arts center.
“Thanks to these grants from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, along with the generous support of our members, the City of Escanaba, and many local businesses, we have the opportunity to develop programs that will enhance the lives of our community members,” says Bonifas Executive Director Sue Roll. “We are extremely grateful for all the support we receive from those who donate generously to the Bonifas throughout the year. The public can look forward to many educational programs and wonderful exhibits of works by U.P. artists throughout the year.”
The grants were awarded through the MCACA peer review process; the Bonifas was one of 659 applications to compete for MCACA fiscal year 2020 funding.
The MCACA peer review process allows for each grant application to be competitively considered by a panel of in-state and out-of-state arts and culture professionals. This ensures the taxpayers, who support this project through legislative appropriations, and all other visitors or residents in Michigan will have access to the highest quality arts and cultural experiences.
