Saturday was supposed to be Graduation Day at Bay College.
But because of the coronavirus, there were no walks across the stage in the gym. Instead, there was a virtual commencement. President Laura Coleman gave a video message to all of the graduates, as well as to students who finished their first school year on Friday and may be returning to campus this fall.
“The first best day of our lives is when you pick Bay College as where you’re going to start your journey in higher education,” Coleman said. “To give yourself support if you’re going to go on to a university, and then for those who are completing their degrees and certificates and going on into the workforce, getting all of that done right here at Bay College. It’s been a thrill for me to be able to have all of you here over the last year.”
The college is moving forward with its two summer sessions, with the first starting next Monday, May 18, with on-line delivery. Bay plans to have in-person classes on campus this fall, starting at the end of August.
Coleman says that many courses will also be offered on-line, which is the way it was even before the virus hit. She says that 70% of Bay students took at least one on-line class on average.
Coleman says they also plan to have an “in-person” graduation ceremony on the Escanaba campus on August 8th.
“I look forward to shaking all of your hands as you walk across the stage,” Coleman said.
