The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported Monday afternoon 488 new coronavirus cases and five new deaths in the state.
The state has now seen 78,507 confirmed cases since the crisis began more than four months ago. Michigan has also recorded 6,154 deaths.
Monday’s 488 positive cases came from 30,180 diagnostic tests since Sunday’s report. That is a positivity rate of 1.6%.
There were 17 new cases in the Upper Peninsula on Monday: six of them in Marquette County, five in Gogebic County, and four new cases in Menominee County. There were single cases added in Houghton and Chippewa Counties.
The Upper Peninsula now has 428 confirmed positive test results since the pandemic began.
These numbers are from the official state report (see below) released daily at 3 p.m., and can differ from local health department reports at times.
The U.P. also has 50 “probable” cases, which do not have a confirmed positive test result but health officials think it is COVID-19 related.
Statewide, as of Monday, Michigan has 8,666 cases and 251 deaths that are listed in the “probable” category.

Michigan has also seen a dramatic increase in testing. As of Monday, the state has completed 1,932,621 tests. That includes 1,723,892 diagnostic tests, and another 208,729 tests for antibodies.
Michigan also announced more recoveries over the weekend. Those are people who are alive at least 30 days after being diagnosed with COVID-19 or testing positive. The state now lists 57,502 people as “recovered”, an increase of 2,340 people since the previous report.
