Upper Peninsula Adds 23 Cases; Hospitalizations Remain Low

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 477 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, and eight new deaths.

State officials also went back through death certificates to match them to previous positive test results. They added seven more deaths to the statewide total.

Michigan now has 93,662 positive test results since the crisis began five months ago, and 6,340 total deaths.

Monday’s 477 positive cases came from roughly 22,000 new diagnostic tests that were added to the statewide total.

Here in the Upper Peninsula, Menominee County added 12 new cases on Tuesday and there were five new cases reported in Marquette County,

Gogebic County added two new positive test results, and single cases were added in Baraga, Ontonagon, and Schoolcraft Counties.

Delta and Keweenaw Counties had cases removed from their totals.

Dickinson County added one case after the state report came out.

The U.P. has a total of 829 confirmed positive test results since the first case was reported back in March.

As for hospitalizations, the Upper Peninsula’s ten hospital systems had a combined five COVID patients, with three in the intensive care unit.

UP Health System numbers were incorrectly entered, and actually had one person in ICU, along with two at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.

All U.P. hospitals are listed as having 21-plus days of personal protection equipment (PPE) on hand.

No new deaths were reported in the Upper Peninsula on Tuesday.

The last death reported in the U.P. was on June 26 in Iron County. Before that, the most recent death was on May 24, in Marquette County.

Statewide as of Tuesday, there have been 9,741 “probable” cases, and 268 deaths are listed as probable. This is where COVID-19 is suspected, but there is no positive test result to confirm it.

The state reports 117 “probable” cases for the Upper Peninsula, as of Tuesday.

As of Tuesday, Michigan has completed 2,630,847 tests. Of those, 2,391,049 tests are diagnostic tests, and 239,798 tests were for antibodies.

The MDHHS says that 67,778 people have recovered, which means they are still alive at least 30 days after diagnosis or onset. That’s an additional 4,142 recoveries in the past week. This is updated every Saturday.
