Following Louis DeJoy’s announcement earlier this week that he will resign as Postmaster General of the United States, Upper Penisnula Congresssman Jack Bergman sent a letter to the United States Postal Service (USPS) Board of Governors, urging them to prioritize the unique delivery needs of our Nation’s rural communities as they consider Mr. DeJoy’s successor.
For over a year, Rep. Bergman has fought back against the Postal Service’s misguided ‘modernization’ plan – a scheme that would strip mail operations from local communities and worsen delivery times for rural residents across Michigan’s First District and the country at large. In May 2024, Rep. Bergman succeeded in compelling Postmaster General DeJoy to halt the plan, postponing its intended changes to the Iron Mountain Processing and Distribution Center in Kingsford until at least 2025, pending further review.
Postmaster General DeJoy’s announced resignation is yet another positive step toward reversing this deeply flawed plan and comes after a January 21, 2025, letter from Rep. Bergman and five of his colleagues to President Donald Trump, requesting his support in stopping USPS’s plan.
