Another snowstorm has hit what has been called the “banana belt” of the Upper Peninsula for years. The only bananas early Monday morning were on the top of snowbanks, as the Escanaba-Gladstone area saw heavy snow hit again.
The huge snowbanks in the middle of Ludington Street are still there from the blizzard from eight days ago. That storm dumped 14 inches of snow on downtown Escanaba, along with large snowdrifts. The roads have still not been completely cleared, thanks to small dustings of snow in the days that followed the blizzard.
And, now, this. The National Weather Service says that by daybreak Monday, there could be another half-foot of snow on Escanaba streets. That has led these school districts to extend the Christmas Break by another day:
Bark River-Harris
Delta-Schoolcraft ISD
Escanaba
Gladstone
Hannahville
Holy Name Catholic School
Mid Peninsula
Rapid River
Those schools will all be closed on Monday with plans to re-open Tuesday morning.
