An Escanaba downtown business that tallied the most votes in the Walking in a Winter Windowland Christmas decoration contest in December knows the importance of using window displays to attract customers.
Christa Madgwick, owner of Delta Hair Company at 1308 Ludington Street, said their window display of ornaments, packages and lights grabbed the attention of their customers.
“They loved it,” Madgwick said. “They noticed it right away, as soon as I changed it.”
Sixteen businesses participated in the promotion. Delta Hair Company won with 28 percent of the votes cast online. Nevaeh Salon received 19 percent, Haas Hearing 17 percent, KCL Embroidery & Kreations 12 percent and Tri-County Safe Harbor 10 percent of the votes cast. Shoppers were encouraged to vote for their favorite store front through the end of December.
Madgwick says she intensionally chose the color red as a theme to highlight in their window display.
“Red signifies Santa and Christmastime. Everyone associates red with Christmas and I just wanted it to be more themed and stand out,” she said.
This is the second year for the contest. It is sponsored by the Business Partners Committee of the Escanaba Downtown Development Authority (DDA). The business with the most votes received advertising packages from the Daily Press and Radio Results Network (RRN).
“The ability for small businesses to be able to promote themselves is important. We certainly appreciate the Daily Press and RRN stepping up to recognize the winning business,” said Craig Woerpel, director of the Escanaba DDA.
Woerpel said this year’s participation shows the tremendous pride and effort that businesses put into creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere in the downtown during the Christmas season.
“Delta Hair Company was able to tap into holiday nostalgia and capture that small town feeling,” Woerpel said. “Christa knows the importance of not only decorating for the holidays but to focus on their window displays all year long.”
Madgwick changes their window display monthly. She said it is important to change the look of their windows on a regular basis.
“If it is the same all the time, people don’t really notice. Changing the windows creates conversation. It creates conversations in our chairs for when people don’t have anything to talk about,” said Madgwick.
The salon has 12 workers offering hair, eye brows, waxing, tanning and nail care. Madgwick said Christmas is their busiest time of year.
“A lot of our customers like our window displays in general but Christmastime is a bigger holiday because most of our clients come through our doors during this season. It’s been really good. They enjoy it,” she said.
The Christmas decorations are now being put away as the Delta Hair Company gets ready for Valentine’s Day. Madgwick says you can expect more red in the window display to remind people to remember their Valentine during another special day.
