You may suffer from this extreme cold weather, but so do your pets.
Vonnie Bruce at the Delta Animal Shelter in Escanaba has some advice when venturing out with your furry friend.
“Keep them short, you know, when they have to go potty,” Bruce told RRN News. “There are certain breeds that exceptions, like, say the huskies and malamutes. They’re dogs with the coats that are double insulated and they love the snow. But just because your dog wants to go outside, it doesn’t mean they want to stay outside for a long time.”
And for those hardier breeds, she recommends an insulated shelter.
“Straw as a beeding is a better thing because it can actually stay warm,” Bruce said. “Stay away from using things like blankets and towels, because they’ll get wet and they’ll freeze, and it’s not going to provide a warm space for them at all.”
Bruce says that if your cat goes missing, it might be cuddling up to the engine of your car for warmth, so check there when trying to find the cat. Also beware of antifreeze, which is toxic to your pets.
Bottom line, she says: when you’re cold, so are your pets.
