It was a cold morning for several Delta County fire crews on Wednesday as a large garage caught fire in the rural part of Escanaba.
Public Safety officers were called to 3142 18th Lane, which is near the Riverland area of Wells Township several miles outside of city limits, at about 7 a.m. When crews got there, they saw a large 40-foot-by-60-foot barn fully-engulfed in flames.
They were concerned about a second garage nearby, along with two large propane tanks that could explode if the fire was not contained.
Crews had to work hard due to the rural location, drawing water from the nearby Hughes’s Pond and bringing the water to the scene. Escanaba Township fire crews helped out, and the fire was put out rather quickly, despite single-digit temperatures.
In all, Escanaba Public Safety itself was on the scene for three-and-a-half hours, and there were no injuries reported. No other structures were destroyed.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
