Save Our Water (S.O.H2O) applauds the unanimous bi-partisan passage of the companion Assembly and Senate bills that will release $132 million for PFAS remediation and mitigation in Wisconsin.
The organization looks forward to Governor Evers signing it into law.
Members of S.O.H2O worked for a year with Representative Jeff Mursau (R-Crivitz) and his staff to develop a bipartisan approach to addressing the PFAS contamination in the state with an emphasis on groundwater standards. As the discussion progressed through 2025 it was decided to use the funding bills to push forward a groundwater standard.
Representative Mursau was the lead author in the State Assembly of the two funding bills. The final version of the legislation, however, dropped that provision. But the dialog S.O.H2O initiated did facilitate discussions between the DNR, the Governor’s Office, and Republican legislators to ultimately find compromise in the passage of significant PFAS legislation.
S.O.H2O also partnered with Clean Wisconsin for their expertise in drafting legislation and in-person meetings with legislators. Ultimately a coalition was formed where environmental organizations, business representatives, and government agencies could find an approach that was a true compromise.
This legislation will help impacted communities and innocent landowners who are forced to deal with PFAS contamination which they didn’t cause and don’t have the resources to clean up.
S.O.H2O will continue to push forward to achieve a meaningful groundwater standard for PFAS and looks toward using the bipartisan approach taken with this legislation as a model for future PFAS legislation.
