STORY UPDATED WITH STATEMENT FROM ATTORNEY GENERAL
A 35-year-old Escanaba man heard his fate Friday afternoon after being convicted of murdering his pregnant girlfriend in 2023.
Tavaris Jackson was sentenced in Delta County Circuit Court by Judge John Economopoulos in the death of Harley Corwin and her unborn baby.
“As to Count One (homicide), it will be the sentence of this court that you be committed to the Michigan Department of Corrections for a period of life without parole,” the judge said. “With credit for 1,028 days served.”
Jackson was also sentenced on the death of Harley Corwin’s unborn baby: 65-80 years for “assault, intentionally causing miscarriage or stillbirth”, to be served concurrently with the top conviction. And he was given two years in prison for a felony firearms violation, to be served consecutively with the other two counts.
Economopoulos dismissed the defense claim that Jackson is a condidate for reform. He noted that Jackson was a habitual offender, and that he has five daughters, making the murder of Corwin and her unborn baby even more heinous.
“If there is a speck of humanity or conscience still in you, you’ll silently pray each night in that prison that nobody’s daughter ever meets a man that lies to her,” Economopoulos said. “That nobody’s daughter ever meets a man who betrays her. That nobody’s daughter ever meets a man who hatches a plan to kill her. That nobody’s daughter ever meets a man who points a gun to her head and pulls the trigger. That nobody’s daughter ever meets a Tavaris Jackson.”
THE FOLLOWING IS FROM ATTORNEY GENERAL NESSEL:
Today, Tavaris Jackson, 35, of Escanaba, was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the 2023 murder of Harley Corwin, 22, of Escanaba, announced Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Jackson was found guilty by a Delta County jury in March of one count of First-Degree Murder, one count of Assault of a Pregnant Individual Intentionally Causing Miscarriage/Stillbirth, and one count of Felony Firearm.
Jackson murdered Corwin on July 3, 2023. Corwin was pregnant at the time of her death. Her remains were discovered on July 8, 2023, in a field in Ford River Township.
“This was a senseless and brutal crime that took the life of Harley and her unborn child,” said Attorney General Nessel. “While no sentence will be enough to erase the pain that her loved ones carry, I hope knowing that the person responsible will never again walk free will bring them a measure of peace.”
The charges were initially filed by the Delta County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. In August 2023, the Department of Attorney General was appointed to prosecute the case.
