Billerud is continuing its commitment to developing the next generation of skilled
trades professionals through its Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Scholarship Program, welcoming two new participants for 2026: CJ Morgan of Norway High School and Christian Anderson of Niagara High School.
Morgan and Anderson were recently recognized during a special event attended by their families, mill leadership, employees, and past scholarship graduates
Launched in 2019, the E&I Scholarship Program provides graduating high school seniors with financial support and hands-on experience as they pursue careers in electrical and instrumentation trades. Each recipient receives up to $12,000 for tuition, fees, and books, along with paid summer employment.
Upon completing the program, students have the opportunity to join Billerud full-time and begin a three-year career at the Quinnesec Mill.
Since its inception, the program has successfully developed 11 full-time E&I technicians who now play key roles at the mill, demonstrating its lasting impact on workforce development and talent pipeline growth.
“Programs like this are critical to the future of our mill and our industry,” said Brad Nurmela, Mill Manager. “We’re not just filling roles—we’re developing skilled professionals who will help drive our success for years to come.”
A key partner in the program is the local technical center, led by instructor Susan Sturm, who helps equip students with essential trade skills and guides them toward post-high school opportunities. Her industry experience and strong connections to the community have been instrumental in identifying and mentoring scholarship candidates.
