State Rep. Parker Fairbairn championed the passage of a bipartisan budget agreement for next year that delivers major wins for residents of the 107th House District and communities across Northern Michigan. Fairbairn secured significant appropriations for both Lake Superior State University and North Central Michigan College, investments that will benefit students while strengthening the region’s economy for years to come.
“I am extremely proud of the work we have done to deliver for Northern Michigan, the Upper Peninsula and the colleges that serve our communities,” said Fairbairn, R-Harbor Springs. “Too often, Northern Michigan and the UP are overlooked in these processes. I worked to bring millions of dollars in investments back home because these schools are economic drivers for our region. These projects will strengthen educational opportunities, expand programs, and benefit the 107th House District and its residents.”
Through Fairbairn’s work during the budget process, the agreement includes $30 million to establish a Center for Applied Sciences at Lake Superior State University. The investment reflects Fairbairn’s continued commitment to workforce development, enhancing educational opportunities and preparing students for high-demand careers close to home.
The budget also includes $3.45 million for North Central Michigan College to support the development of the Skilled Trades Education Pathways (STEP) Center, creating new opportunities for workforce training and student success.
Fairbairn also secured 2.5 million dollars in funding through the Legislatively Directed Spending Items (LDSI) program to support a new Dental Hygiene Program and facility at NCMC.
These investments will make Northern Michigan’s higher education institutions more competitive, helping attract students, create jobs, and encourage more young people to build their futures in Michigan. Strong colleges also provide lasting economic benefits to surrounding communities by supporting local businesses, attracting employers, and creating a skilled workforce.
Beyond these district-specific investments, Fairbairn also helped secure critical statewide funding for first responders, schools, infrastructure, and public safety. The bipartisan budget includes NO new taxes, strengthens government accountability, continues efforts to eliminate wasteful spending, and protects Michigan’s rainy-day fund while making responsible investments in essential services.
“This budget was the result of months of hard work and tough negotiations, but we stayed focused on what Michiganders have been asking for,” Fairbairn said. “We protected taxpayers, invested in the priorities that matter most, and delivered meaningful results for Northern Michigan and the UP. I am grateful for the opportunity to bring these wins home for the people I represent.”
