Upper Peninsula Power Company has temporarily closed the public fishing platform at Dam 3 Reservoir on the Escanaba River after the platform sustained damage over the weekend. The closure is limited to the fishing platform and does not affect operation of the hydroelectric facility.
The wooden fishing platform sustained structural damage over the weekend and has been determined unsafe for public use. UPPCO is assessing the extent of the damage and developing a repair plan. A timeline for reopening has not yet been established.
“We know many residents and visitors enjoy spending time at the Dam 3 fishing platform, especially during the summer months,” said Dan Freeborn, UPPCO Manager of Communications & External Affairs. “While this temporary closure is disappointing, public safety comes first. The fishing platform will remain closed until repairs are complete and we’ve confirmed the structure is safe for public use.”
UPPCO reminds anyone recreating near its hydroelectric facilities to obey all posted signs and barriers, remain aware of changing conditions, and avoid entering any restricted or closed areas.
