State Representative Dave Prestin (R-Caedar River) released the following statement on Saturday in response to the Michigan Supreme Court’s ruling on Line 5:
“Yesterday, the Michigan Supreme Court issued a disappointing and misguided 6-1 decision that will further delay the critical Enbridge Line 5 tunnel project beneath the Straits of Mackinac. This ruling, which sends the Michigan Public Service Commission back to redo its environmental review, prioritizes activist agendas over the safety, energy security, and economic well-being of Upper Peninsula families.”
“This decision ignores the years of rigorous study and approvals already completed, including by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. The tunnel represents the safest way to protect our Great Lakes while ensuring the continued reliable flow of essential energy products that heat homes, power businesses, and support our economy.”
“The people of the Upper Peninsula are sick and tired of politicians and environmental organizations using endless litigation around Line 5 as a fundraising tool, knowing full well they’re on the wrong end of the science. This outcome underscores the need for decisive action beyond state bureaucracy. I vow to work closely with the federal government to expedite all necessary federal permits and move this project forward without unnecessary state-imposed roadblocks.”
