A dedication ceremony was held this past Saturday for the Barnes-Hecker Memorial Park in Marquette County’s Ely Township.
That’s where 51 miners perished in a huge collapse back on November 3, 1926.
Memorial committee member Annie Tippett tells RRN News that things have moved quickly since Ely Township bought the property from its private owners. Tippett says among other things, they’ve repurposed an old foundation and added a new decorative fence.
Six Tippett family members were in the mine that day, two of whom died.
Special commemorative events are planned for the 100th anniversary of the tragedy.
