Marquette’s Anna Aho-Rink rode a blue wave to a victory early Wednesday morning in the 109th state house district race. Aho-Rink defeated incumbent Republican Karl Bohnak in a race called at just after midnight, returning the traditionally-blue seat to Democrats after one term in Republican hands.
“I was so heartened to see voter turnout across the country, and across the state,” Aho-Rink told RRN News early Wednesday. “It really allowed Democratic candidates to shine, and to bring the voice of the voters, voice of the people, back to where it belongs.”
Aho-Rink says she’s ready to get to work the minute she gets down to Lansing.
“I have been elected the representative for the 109th district, and that means every one who lives in the district,” she said. “I’m looking to meeting everyone where they are. And I’ll be working with the other UP representatives to bring wins back to the Upper Peninsula.”
She says her recipe for victory was the same as it was for many Democratic candidates. The Democrats will have majorities in the Michigan House and Senate, as well as in both chambers of Congress in Washington.
“For the vast majority of the people I’ve been talking to, it’s affordability and the economy,” Aho-Rink said. “Jobs are just not paying the bills. The cost of gas. The cost of food. Energy bills. Housing.”
