On 01/17/2019 at approximately 8:23PM, Delta County Central Dispatch received a 911 call of a car versus bicycle personal injury accident.
Escanaba Public Safety Officers and Rampart EMS personnel were dispatched to the scene of the accident.
When Officers arrived on scene they observed an older male subject lying in the roadway. The driver of the vehicle, a 36 year old Escanaba woman, advised Officers she was traveling north and did not see the male on the bicycle “shoot” west across North Lincoln Road from 1st Avenue North prior to the accident.
The male subject was identified as a 59 year old Escanaba man, who was transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital and later transferred to U.P Health Systems Marquette, by Rampart EMS, for further treatment.
Escanaba Public Safety would like to take this time to remind the public of bicycle safety. The Michigan Motor Vehicle Code does require bicycles to have a working headlamp at night. A summary of the statute, MCL257.662, requires a headlamp on a bicycle capable of emitting a white light 500 feet ahead when operating one half hour after sunset and one half hour after sunrise. The code also requires the bicycle to be equipped with a red reflector on the rear of the bike to be visible from all distance 100 to 600 feet.
