DNA has led to the arrest of a man in connection to a cold case near the Upper Peninsula.
Local Three News reports that the Marinette County Sheriff has identified the suspect as 82-year-old Raymond Vannieuwenhoven of Lakewood, Wisconsin.
He was arrested in a double homicide investigation.
25-year-old David Schuldes and 24-year-old Ellen Matheys – a recently engaged couple from Green Bay – had gone to the McClintock Park in western Marinette County to camp July 9, 1976.
Police say Schuldes’ died after being shot that afternoon. Matheys’ body was found the next day.
Authorities say she was sexually assaulted before she was killed.
The park is in the Town of Silver Cliff.
Renderings were released last summer showing what the suspect may have looked like at the time of the murders and as of 2018.
The DNA match was confirmed by the State of Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Lab.
