The by-pass discharging partially treated wastewater into the receiving waters of Little Bay de Noc event, which began on Apr 17th, concluded on Apr 22nd at around 10am. In total, it is estimated that around 400,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater was by-passed.
Within these six days that the by-pass was occurring, a total of 28,540,000 gallons had passed though the plant.
This by-pass event was critical and essential to avoid the sanitary sewer collection system from backing up. Had any large scale back-up within the collection system occurred, private property damage would have been un-avoidable. By-passing a small portion of a peak flow above the Wastewater Plant’s design capacity is also required to maintain an effective treatment process of the majority of the incoming flow.
