State Rep. Beau LaFave released the following statement in response to Attorney General Dana Nessel’s pledge to use “every resource available to our office” shut down Line 5:
“While the governor and attorney general continue to wage political battles over Line 5 and pander to their political base in Metro Detroit, valuable time and taxpayer money is being squandered. The attorney general’s new pledge to shut down Line 5, whatever the cost to Michigan families, is an insult to the democratic process. It is not her job to ignore duly enacted laws. Her job is to enforce the laws as written. If the attorney general would like to write the laws, rather than enforce them, I invite her to run for a legislative seat in 2020. In the meantime, it’s time to stop the political theater, get down to business and begin construction on the planned multi-use utility tunnel— which will offer an even safer means to transport fuel and lay the groundwork for the inexpensive, efficient and reliable delivery of propane, electricity and broadband between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
“Shutting down Line 5 without a plan for a new pipeline in place leaves Michigan only with worse and more expensive options for delivering energy to Upper Peninsula homes. I wish the governor and attorney general would remember that while they continue kick this political football back and forth, Yooper families are pinching pennies to pay their increasing energy bills. Time’s up on talking. It’s time to act on a new tunnel for Line 5.”
