At the Detroit Regional Chamber’s annual Mackinac Policy Conference (MPC), Governor Gretchen Whitmer expanded her commitment to developing the infrastructure in Michigan with today’s announcement of the NAIAS 2020 Michigan Mobility Challenge.
“Michigan is a state of problem solvers, innovators and experts in the mobility spectrum. Together with MEDC, MDOT, and other partners, we are kicking off the NAIAS 2020 Michigan Mobility Challenge,” Gov. Whitmer said.
The NAIAS 2020 Michigan Mobility Challenge will showcase cutting-edge technologies at the coveted annual North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) by providing new, innovative mobility solutions between Cobo Center, the Detroit Airport, restaurants and more. This program highlights Michigan’s global leadership in developing smart infrastructure, and NAIAS’s role as a global platform for unveiling transportation technologies as the challenge runs alongside the NAIAS 2020 programming.
The project, led by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and PlanetM, tasks companies deploying technologies that embody how automated and connected vehicle technology can transform how we live, work and play. The specific projects for the challenge will be determined based on proposals submitted through a Request for Proposals (RFP) that will be released in mid-June.
Industry partners will also be asked to team up with university partners to report public acceptance and effectiveness of the mobility solutions, while local stakeholders will attend a workshop to provide additional insights into the RFP and aspects of the challenge.
The 2020 NAIAS Michigan Mobility Challenge further establishes Michigan as a leader in the future of mobility by showcasing emerging mobility solutions in a real world deployment, building off of the $8 Million Michigan Mobility Challenge announced last year at MPC.
