The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported Monday afternoon that the state’s total number of confirmed coronavirus cases has increased to 32,000, which is 576 more cases in the past 24 hours.
There have now been 2,469 deaths reported in Michigan due to the virus.
That’s 77 more deaths in the past 24 hours statewide.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer, in a Monday afternoon news conference, said that people adhering to the A”Stay at Home” order are helping to slow the spread of the virus in the state.
“It’s working,” she said. “We’ve got to keep it up.”
Whitmer says that the state’s hospital caseload is on the decline.
“We’ve seen the number of patients who are in the hospital with a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 decline from a high point of ten days ago,” Whitmer said. “In fact, we’ve seen a 15 percent reduction from the last ten days. However, the number of cases remain high.”
Whitmer says that the state is “testing more and more each day” and that the number of positive cases has been going down.
The state says that 3,237 people who had tested positive have recovered from the illness. Those are people who have survived at least 30 days since being diagnosed with, or testing positive for, COVID-19. This number is updated once per week, on Saturdays, by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
There are 65 reported COVID-19 cases in the Upper Peninsula: 32 in Marquette County, 13 in Delta County, four in Mackinac County, four in Gogebic County, three in Dickinson County, three in Schoolcraft County, two in Houghton County, two in Chippewa County, and one each in Menominee and Luce Counties.
Delta County and Chippewa County both added cases on Monday.
There are ten deaths reported in the Upper Peninsula. Six in Marquette County, two in Dickinson County, and one each in Delta and Gogebic Counties.
The overwhelming majority of the cases and deaths are in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties, surrounding the City of Detroit.
This information is updated daily at 3 p.m., with COVID-19 results included as of 10 a.m.

Note on cumulative counts: This report is provisional and subject to change. As public health investigations of individual cases continue, there will be corrections to the status and details of referred cases that result in changes to this report.
Note on the deaths: Deaths must be reported by health care providers, medical examiners/coroners, and recorded by local health departments in order to be counted.
Note on jurisdictional classification: In order to provide more accurate data, the “Other” jurisdiction category will no longer be used. Michigan Department of Corrections cases will be listed under “MDOC”. Federal Correctional Institution cases will be listed under “FCI”.
Note on Case Fatality Rate: The case fatality rate is the number of people who have died from causes associated with COVID-19 out of the total number of people with confirmed COVID-19 infections. It is used as one measure of illness severity. Several factors can affect this number. Until recently, COVID-19 lab testing has prioritized for hospitalized individuals due to limited testing availability. As a result, COVID-19 infections were identified more often in people who were more severely ill. This would lead to a higher case fatality rate. As more people with mild illness are tested, it is likely the case fatality rate will go down.
City of Detroit and Wayne County are reported separately.

Note on recovery: During this response, MDHHS is reviewing vital records statistics to identify any laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases who are 30 days out from their onset of illness to represent recovery status. As the pandemic continues to impact Michigan, this pool will expand to include more cases. Recovered is defined as the number of persons with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis who are alive 30 days post-onset (or referral date if onset is not available). The number of persons recovered on April 17, 2020 represents COVID-19 confirmed individuals with an onset date on or prior to March 18, 2020. These numbers will be updated every Saturday.
