One day after announcing a partial re-opening of the Upper Peninsula, Governor Gretchen Whitmer answered a range of questions Tuesday morning in an interview with the Radio Results Network. One of the questions was can barbers, hair salons, and fitness facilities begin to re-open? The answer: no.
“If we don’t see an uptick of COVID-19, then we can take that next step,” Whitmer told RRN News. “Then, we can look at salons and these more personal services. For this juncture, this is the right opportunity (bars, restaurants, retail stores opening). It’s going to be dependent on everyone continuing to do their part.”
Bars, restaurants, and retail stores can reopen Friday morning at 12:01 a.m., with half capacity. Small gatherings of ten people are allowed, with proper social distancing.
“When you do go out, use good judgement,” Whitmer said. “It’s not time to host a big party. It you want to have a small one, you know, ten people or less, in those regions, that’s OK. But just be smart. That’s what we’re asking people to do. We’re counting on everyone in Regions 6 (northern lower Michigan) and Eight (U.P.) to get it right, so that we can loosen restrictions for the rest of us.”

“If we see COVID-19 spreading in a community, we might have to think about taking a step backward,” Whitmer said. “I know no one wants to do that. That’s why we’re really calling on people across our state to keep following these best practices. If you don’t need to go out, don’t. But when you do, wear your mask, stay six feet away from others, make sure your washing your hands.”
Hair salons, barbers, fitness facilities, and other “personal services” businesses remain shut down through at least May 28th.
Technically, the Safer at Home order remains in effect, but the U-P can start having gatherings of ten people starting at 12:01 Friday morning.
