CLICK TO HEAR JACK HALL’S INTERVIEW WITH REC. DIRECTOR KIM PETERSON
While some Upper Peninsula communities cancelled their Fourth of July celebrations, Escanaba is moving forward with its weekend of activities.
Recreation Director Kim Peterson says there will be 13 food vendors in Ludington Park Friday night and many of them will stick around Saturday as well. The City Band will play in the bandshell area at 8:30 Friday night, and the big fireworks display will be held at dusk.
As for the fireworks, Peterson says that the city council provides a budget to pay for them, and there was a huge response from the business community who donated money…despite the fact that many of them have been effected by COVID. Peterson says with Ludington Park spread out over 120 acres, she’s not worried about social distancing.
“Most of the people come down there with their families anyway, so we think it will be just fine,” Peterson said. “We do want people to remember the governor’s executive orders and spread out. Wear a mask if you’re within six feet of people. The fireworks will be as good as, if not better, than last year’s because the businesses were so generous.”
She added that Public Health has given the city money to put numerous hand sanitation stations, as well as portable toilets, throughout the park.
