This letter was written by Ishpeming School superintendent Carrie Meyer and was shared with the media on Tuesday.
Dear IPSD Parents/Guardians and Students:
The conclusion of the 2019-20 school year was very different from any previous year. As you may recall, late on the evening of March 12, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and State Superintendent Michael Rice announced that all K-12 school buildings—public, private and boarding—were ordered to be closed from Monday, March 16 to Sunday, April 5, 2020, in order to slow the spread of COVID19.
On April 2, 2020, an Executive Order suspending face-to-face learning at K-12 schools for the remainder of the school year was released. From that point forward, we were required to facilitate distance-learning plans for all our students. Our staff at the Ishpeming Public School District understands the difficulty and stress that this may have caused many parents, guardians, students, and staff members. As our staff worked diligently to create plans to educate our students and finish the school year, we appreciated our parents’ assistance and support to help ensure remote learning continued in their homes.
As we plan for the 2020-21 school year, we realize that we may continue to face additional challenges. Therefore, I wanted to reach out to reassure everyone that we are diligently working on implementing a safe educational plan by providing options. If face-to-face learning is permitted, we will be excited to provide education in-house by following the recommendations of our local Health Department and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
If you should have concerns regarding face-to-face learning or if your child or children have a preexisting health condition, we will accommodate your child by providing curriculum through our on-line academy. We are currently working on expanding our on-line offerings to include kindergarten through grade twelve. If on-line schooling is what your child or children need, please contact your principal’s office for more information.
At this time, we are creating educational plans for all possible phases allowing for flexibility due to changes that may arise. As summer progresses and we finalize our plans, more information will be provided. Your child’s safety is a priority and we plan to provide a safe educational experience for each student of the Ishpeming Public School District. We appreciate your continued support and patience as we move forward.
