Michigan Adds 612 Cases, No New Deaths; Seven Cases In Menominee Co.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported Friday afternoon 612 new coronavirus cases and no new deaths.

However, the state went through death certificates and matched previous positive test results to people who died. They added 15 deaths to the state’s total using that method. Those are people who may have died days or weeks ago, according to state health officials.

Michigan now has 68,295 confirmed positive cases and 6,039 COVID-19 deaths.

“Regular reviews of death certificate data maintained in Vital Records reporting systems are conducted by MDHHS staff three times per week. As a part of this process, records that identify COVID-19 infection as a contributing factor to death are compared against all laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS),” MDHHS explains. “If a death certificate is matched to a confirmed COVID-19 case and that record in the MDSS does not indicate the individual died, the MDSS record is updated to indicate the death and the appropriate local health department is notified. These matched deaths are then included with mortality information posted to the Michigan Coronavirus website. As a result of the most recent assessment, today’s data includes 15 additional deaths identified by this methodology.”

There were 14 new cases reported in the Upper Peninsula on Friday, with seven of those in Menominee County. The others included two cases each in Chippewa and Dickinson Counties, and one new case in Houghton, Gogebic and Marquette Counties.

There have now been 254 confirmed positive cases and 18 deaths linked to COVID-19 in the Upper Peninsula in the nearly four months of this pandemic.

Michigan also tracks “probable” cases and deaths. Those are people who do not have a positive test result confirmed, but health officials believe their illnesses or deaths were related to COVID-19.

As of Friday, the state lists an additional 7,390 cases and 246 deaths in the “probable” category.

There have also been 12 “probable” cases listed in the Upper Peninsula.

As of Friday, the state completed 1,445,133 tests, including 179,789 tests for antibodies and 1,265,344 diagnostic tests.

The state lists 52,891 people as having “recovered”. This means that they are still alive at least 30 days after having a positive test confirmed, or being diagnosed with COVID-19. That number will be updated again on Saturday.
