The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported Saturday afternoon 653 new coronavirus cases and six new deaths.
There were a record 30,000 test results added on Saturday, with nearly 28,000 of them being diagnostic tests.
Michigan now has 68,948 confirmed positive cases and 6,067 COVID-19 deaths.
There was an increase of three cases reported in the Upper Peninsula on Saturday: two in Menominee County, and one in Gogebic County. A case that had been listed Friday in Dickinson County is now listed as an Iron County case.
There have now been 257 confirmed positive cases and 18 deaths linked to COVID-19 in the Upper Peninsula in the nearly four months of this pandemic. (see list at bottom of this report)
The state also went through death certificates and matched previous positive test results to people who died. They added 22 deaths to the state’s total using that method. Those are people who may have died days or weeks ago, according to state health officials.
“Regular reviews of death certificate data maintained in Vital Records reporting systems are conducted by MDHHS staff three times per week. As a part of this process, records that identify COVID-19 infection as a contributing factor to death are compared against all laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS),” MDHHS explains.
“If a death certificate is matched to a confirmed COVID-19 case and that record in the MDSS does not indicate the individual died, the MDSS record is updated to indicate the death and the appropriate local health department is notified. These matched deaths are then included with mortality information posted to the Michigan Coronavirus website. As a result of the most recent assessment, today’s data includes 22 additional deaths identified by this methodology.”
The state lists 53,867 people as having “recovered”. This means that they are still alive at least 30 days after having a positive test confirmed, or being diagnosed with COVID-19. That is an increase of 976 recoveries in the last week.
“During this response, MDHHS is reviewing vital records statistics to identify any laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases who are 30 days out from their onset of illness to represent recovery status. As the pandemic continues to impact Michigan, this pool will expand to include more cases. Recovered is defined as the number of persons with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis who are alive 30 days post-onset (or referral date if onset is not available),” MDHHS explains.
“The number of persons recovered on July 10, 2020 represents COVID-19 confirmed individuals with an onset date on or prior to June 10, 2020. If an individual dies from a COVID-related cause >30 days from onset/referral, they are removed from the number of persons recovered. These numbers will be updated every Saturday”
Michigan also tracks “probable” cases and deaths. Those are people who do not have a positive test result confirmed, but health officials believe their illnesses or deaths were related to COVID-19.
As of Saturday, the state lists an additional 7,422 cases and 246 deaths in the “probable” category.
There have also been twelve “probable” cases listed in the Upper Peninsula.
As of Saturday, the state completed 1,475,261 tests, including 182,310 tests for antibodies and 1,292,951 diagnostic tests.
