John Damoose emerged from a crowded field of seven Republican candidates Tuesday to win the GOP primary in the 107th house district, which covers the eastern U.P. and northern lower Michigan. That is the seat currently held by House Speaker Lee Chatfield, who is term-limited after this term. Damoose had 7,968 votes, or 56 percent, as of 1 a.m. Wednesday. His nearest competitor was Kathy Twardy with 1,640 votes, or 11 percent.
“I am absolutely humbled by the results of the primary tonight,.” Damoose wrote on Facebook. “I can only say two things – to God be the glory, and to all of those who stepped up to support me in so many ways, thank you. To my competitors, running in a primary against fellow Republicans is tough, especially with such a qualified field as we had in this race. Each of my you should be commended for your well run campaigns, and I look forward to working with you in the future.”
Damoose, a documentary filmmaker and religious broadcaster from Harbor Springs, will face Democrat Jim Page in the November election.
Page won Tuesday night’s Democratic primary over Kurt Perron, 4,909 to 2,154, or 69-30 percent. Page is a retired teacher from Sault Ste. Marie and was also a sergeant in the U.S. Marines. Page called himself the “only true Democrat in the race” and called not only for his election, but that of Joe Biden for president and Gary Peters for Senate. He also touted his endorsement by environmental and conservation groups.
