Janet Metsa won the Democratic Primary election for the 110th state house seat on Tuesday, which covers the western part of the Upper Peninsula and the Keweenaw Peninsula, as well as a small portion of northwestern Marquette County.
Metsa earned the right to face Republican incumbent Greg Markkanen, who ran unopposed in Tuesday’s GOP primary.
Metsa has worked as chemical engineer at a water quality business in the Copper Country and has served as the Houghton County Democratic Party chairman.
With all but a handful of precincts reporting early Wednesday, Metsa easily defeated fellow Democrats Lawrence Dale and Casey VerBerkmoes. She had 6,897 votes, or 73 percent. Dale had 1,623 votes (17 percent) and VanBerkmoes had 963 votes (10 percent).
