Vicki Elkin, Executive Director of The Fund for Lake Michigan has provided official notification to the M&M Area Community Foundation (MMACF) that it will lend support and counsel to the Resilient Future Project established as an ad hoc committee by the MMACF Board of Directors.
The Resilient Future Project, a volunteer initiative including area citizens and local officials, supports action plans to protect water resources of the region including Lake Michigan and its tributaries. Its creation resulted from MMACF participation in the Great Lakes One Water (GLOW) partnership.
“We are very pleased to receive this news,” said John Lee MMACF Board Vice President and Resilient Future Project Chair. “It means we are eligible for grant dollars and the technical assistance they can provide in support of local efforts to address water run-off and storm related contamination to the waters of Green Bay.”
The Fund for Lake Michigan supports actions that enhance the health of Lake Michigan, its shoreline and river systems, and its communities. They do so by investing in projects that benefit local communities and the environment when those projects are organized and supported by citizens and local leaders.
In 2019 the MMACF convened a forum at UWGB – Marinette Campus to gather insight from Great Lakes water specialists, and encourage discussion of storm related impacts to Lake Michigan with local elected officials, opinion leaders, and area residents.
“Water resources play a very important role in the sustainability of the economy and quality of life in our region,” said Paula Gruszynski MMACF Executive Director. “Protecting these resources is everyone’s responsibility and I commend the MMACF board and John Lee’s commitment to citizen action. That is what caught the eye of The Fund for Lake Michigan leadership,” she added.
After evaluating the input and summarizing the information gathered at the September 2019 forum, the Resilient Future Project committee decided to move forward with an action plan for greater citizen involvement and participation in the protection of water resources in our area, with an emphasis on engagement, cooperation, and demonstration.
