Michigan Adds 8,000 New Recoveries; No More Sunday Reports

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 838 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, and five new deaths.

State officials also went through death certificates and matched them with previous positive test results. They added three more deaths to the statewide total.

Michigan now has 106,215 positive test results since the crisis began five months ago, and 6,534 total deaths.

State officials reported two new deaths in Houghton County, which makes three in the county in the past week. Those were the first deaths reported in the Upper Peninsula since late June.

The state has stopped doing reports on Sundays.

Weekend data are often erratic and generally lower than other days due to reduced testing and lab staffing. With respect to policy matters, MDHHS focuses its review of trends on the number of reports for each date that individuals experienced the onset of symptoms and not the daily reported cases which represent the day test results were received. Onset date reporting is shown on the MI Safe Start Map as well the Daily Cases by Status report on the Michigan.gov/Coronavirus website and this reporting will not be affected by this change.

“At this time, reporting on Sunday rather than Monday is not critical to our understanding of the virus,” said MDHS Director Robert Gordon. “This change will allow staff who have not had a real day off since February to get some relief and allow the department to prioritize more valuable data reporting, including school outbreak information.”

The state now says 80,678 people have recovered from COVID-19. That is defined by being alive at least 30 days from diagnosis or onset of the illness. There were just over eight thousand recoveries added in the latest state report.

The U.P. had 1,111 total cases since the crisis began five months ago, and 21 deaths.

The Upper Peninsula added 20 new cases on Saturday: ten of them were in Houghton County and there were four new cases in neighboring Baraga County.

Statewide, there have been 10,976 “probable” cases, and 272 deaths are listed as probable. This is where COVID-19 is suspected, but there is no positive test result to confirm it.

The Upper Peninsula had 167 probable cases as of Saturday.
