Voters in the City of Negaunee agreed to a tax increase Tuesday to make major repairs to the Negaunee Ice Arena. The city will able to borrow $1.25 million after the vote passed, unofficially, 747 yes to 309 no.
Negaunee City Manager Nate Hefron tells RRN News that they’re ready to get going, with some bids coming in this week for the main part of the plan: a new refrigeration system for the ice. They’ll also make other upgrades, including renovating the locker rooms, parking lot, bathroom, and bleachers.
Hefron says they will be making some operational changes at the ice arena to make sure that there won’t be a need for another tax request for city residents.
The city had said that the ice arena would have to close if the bond issue had been rejected.
